Nightscape Miniatures Series 4


Look up into the deep midnight blue of the night sky and watch the moon rise and cross the heavens. See the gentle sparkle of stars surrounding it. Breathe deep as you embrace the peace and quiet of the night and watch in wonder as land and water are transformed into velvet, dark and iridescent forms by the lunar light.

I have been fascinated by the night sky since I was a little girl. When I was young I was fortunate enough to live in the country. I lived in a village without streetlights and little night traffic. It was a place where the northern night sky was a midnight blue blanket on which were scattered shimmering stars and a glowing moon. This series of miniatures explores the contrasts of the white of those celestial bodies against the deep dark colours of night. Of how the bones of the land stand in gentle relief as the night removes the details and colours of the day. Of how the glimmer and mystery of water is intensified in the unique play of dark and light in a nightscape. While I continue to repeat these themes and explorations and keep the size format the same no two pieces are identical, they are as varied as each new night we experience.
