BLISS Detail
- Pair of Miniature Screens, painted kiln-fired glass, wood frames
- 11” X 15”
Listen to the rustle of leaves in the wind as you watch the moonlit shadows of leaves against the wall. What secrets of the universe do they impart to you? Hear the rustle as the leaves, touched by frost, are carried by the wind to the ground. The music they create joins into the song of the miraculous cycle of life, as leaves fall to feed the tree from which they were nurtured.
Every leaf speaks
Bliss to me,
Falling from
The autumn tree
Emily Bronte
I created the leaf works because like Emily Bronte I find bliss in trees and leaves. Leaf images appear throughout my work: on these miniature screens, on simple framed squares, votive holders, and as integral parts of larger works. These particular pieces are hand carved block prints. First I drew the leaves, then carved the print blocks, then ground and prepared the glass paints and applied them to the blocks and carefully hand pressed each leaf individually. The pieces were then fired in the kiln and the pigments became part of the glass. As in traditional print making the carved blocks are reused throughout the design and on other pieces. I continually change the type of glass, paint, and compositions of the block prints, to create unique individual works of art.
